Gordon served in the United States Army from 1981 – 2001, as a Combat Engineer, in duty positions including team leader, squad leader, Platoon Sergeant, Senior Active Army Advisor to the Utah National Guard, as well as First Sergeant of three Engineer companies, culminating in assignment as First Sergeant of the Army’s only Arctic Airborne Engineer Company in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Gordon was selected for promotion to Sergeant Major in 2001, but instead elected to retire Gordon served three overseas tours as well as deployment to exercises or operations in more than a dozen countries.

Mark served in the Kentucky Army National Guard from August 1982 - December 2002. He was a Staff Sergeant in the 438th Military Police Company in Louisville.
